In the event of injury or sudden illness, failure to provide first aid could result in a casualty’s death. The employer should ensure that an employee who is injured or taken ill at work receives immediate attention. The Health & Safety Executive will prosecute in cases where there is a significant risk, a disregard for established standards or persistent poor compliance with the law.
As a minimum, a low-risk workplace such as a small office should have a first-aid box and a person appointed to take charge of first-aid arrangements, such as calling the emergency services if necessary. Employers must also provide information about first-aid arrangements to their employees. Workplaces where there are more significant health and safety risks will need a trained first-aider.
